Teen Center USA Elk Grove holds auditions for Teen Idol each Spring.  This annual competition is for Amateurs only, ages 7th-12th grades. Cash prizes will be awarded for the top 3 performances. Top performers are invited to participate in a variety of local events through the year. We will be hosting this event completely virtually or socially distanced in cases where participants may not have access to recording equipment.

Due to the low turn out in registered participants, Teen Center USA has made the difficult decision to postpone Teen Idol 2021. Please stay tuned for future announcements on rescheduled dates for this competition.

WHAT IS TEEN IDOL?

Teen Idol gives teens a chance to express themselves with their vocal talents while building their self-esteem.
Teen Center USA Elk Grove holds auditions for Teen Idol each Spring.  This annual competition is for Amateurs (non-professional) only, 7th- 12th grades. The competition is for Solo and Group Vocals. Choirs and Duets encouraged to audition. Auditions are scheduled for Friday evenings in March starting at 7:00 p.m.   Semi-Finals and Finals are in April.  Pre-registration required.  Call 916-686-6942 for more information or if you are interested in sponsoring this event.

WHAT ARE THE ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS TO PARTICIPATE?

Contestant must be in the 7th-12th grades, proof of grade must be presented at the audition. 1st Place Winners of the Teen Idol Competition from previous years are NOT eligible to participate in the current season of competition. Teen Idol is an Amateurs Only vocal competition. Contestants must demonstrate, to the satisfaction of the Teen Idol Committee/Coordinator that you do not derive income from performances. Teen Idol contestants may not be signed with any form of talent agency.

IS THERE A FEE TO REGISTER?

There is no fee to register/audition. There is however there will be a general admission cost for the Semi Finals and Finals event

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER I REGISTER?

You will receive a confirmation email with information that will need for your audition. A Staff member will contact you by phone or email to confirm your registration the week of your audition.

HOW MANY SONGS MAY I AUDITION WITH?

You will be preforming one song at auditions. Your song must be preapproved and only one person can preform a song so please have a back up song incase the song you have selected has already been preapproved for someone else.

DO I HAVE TO USE THE SAME SONGS I AUDITIONED WITH FOR THE SEMI-FINALS AND FINALS?

We recommend that each time you perform; it is a new song choice, though it is not required. This includes the semi-finals and finals.

DOES IT MATTER WHAT I SING?

All lyrics must be approved by the Teen Idol Committee prior to your performance. Lyrics should be kept appropriate and are not to include suggestive language or explicit lyrics. All songs must be submitted via email to tcusaeg@frontier.com or in person at the Teen Center USA facility prior to your scheduled audition.  Any performer that uses inappropriate language may be subject to disqualification.

DO I HAVE A TIME LIMIT ON MY SONG?

Songs should last between 2 -4 minutes each and be no longer than 4 minutes each in length.

DO I HAVE TO PROVIDE MY OWN MUSIC IF I CHOOSE KARAOKE STYLE (BACKGROUND MUSIC)?

Yes. Teen Idol does not provide music. We do however provide a sound system that you may plug your IPod or CD into, including microphones.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO MY AUDITION?

We would ask that performers dress appropriately and modestly, keeping in mind the family friendly nature of Teen Idol and adhere to school district dress code.

WHEN WILL I KNOW IF I MOVE UP TO THE SEMI-FINALS?

You will be notified at the end of the evening at your audition if you are proceeding to the Semi-Finals. Wildcards will be notified at the close of the last audition and will also be contacted by phone by the end of March. All semi-finalists including any Wildcards will be posted on the Teen Idol Main Page.

WHAT ARE THE JUDGING CRITERIA?

The judging panel uses a 1-10 rating system which include Musical/Vocal Talent, Appearance, Originality, and Ability to entertain the crowd.  Judges will briefly critique each performance while you are on stage but the individual rating by judge for each performance will not be disclosed.

WILL THERE BE AN AUDIENCE AT THE AUDITIONS?

The public may attend auditions for $5 general admission. 5 and under are free. There are always family and friends at the auditions, thought the crowd is usually small, we encourage attendance. Do expect there will be a small audience. This year, since auditions will be virtual, admission this year will be free.
